[EXPERIMENTAL] Unofficial CM12 for WeTek Play with Kodi & TVH Live TV

[EXPERIMENTAL] Unofficial CM12 for WeTek Play with Kodi & TVH Live TV

Release notes

This build includes a totally new kernel and Amlogic code based on their latest SDK, and I took the chance to get rid of Amlogic DVB drivers and use those from WeTek Play's OpenELEC build; by doing this I am able to run DVBAPI apps like Tvheadend.
Kodi Live TV support under Android was one of the most requested features, this experimental build allows you to run Lollipop and Kodi Live TV (WeTek Theater is no longer supported with the provided drivers).

The new 3.10 kernel brings OMX support as well (Android libstagefright media decoding), while Amlogic's prebuilt libraries work very good on KitKat (in case I can do a CM11 build with this kernel) they don't work at all with Lollipop so just consider it broken, for more info you can read the release notes of this rom.
Just to be sure to have a good media experience use Kodi, I ran all my tests running the "14.1 RC beta" dated 12 Jan, that you can find here (this is a flashable zip and, in case you don't wanna sideload the apk you can just flash it and at boot it should be automatically installed), anyway feel free to experiment with nightlies, etc.

Now I will give you some details on how to configure Tvheadend, if you already know what to do you can skip this section.

Tvheadend will run automatically at boot and you can access to it from a web browser (even from a different device, you are not forced to do it from the box) at http://wetek_ip_address:9981

From this WebUI click "Configuration" -> "DVB Inputs" -> "Networks" and add a new Network according to the type of tuner you have (for example I created a DVB-S network called "Hotbird" and assigned the E13.0 pre-defined muxes, just pay attention that they are not bleeding edge updated so if you don't find a channel you might have to insert manually the transponder by looking at frequencies on sites like kingofsat or lyngsat).

After that go to "TV Adapters", click the link with a folder icon showing your adapter's name (if you're running the dual DVB-S2 tuner you will see two of them, #1 is the input closer to the edge of the box, while #0 the one closer to the rear usb ports), and click "Enabled", configure the eventual parameters (DiseqC, Unicable, etc.) and save the settings.
Go to the option right under the adapter name, assign it to the network that you have created and configure the eventual parameters.

Now go back to "Networks", after a couple of minutes you should see the "Scan Q length" lowering its value, when in reaches 0 everything has been scanned and you can proceed mapping the channels from "Services" section.

For further instructions, here you can find a tutorial to show you how to configure the DVB-S tuner, and here one for the DVB-S tuner.

Before leaving the configuration go to "Recordings" and set a "Recording System Path" pointing it to your external storage (on my roms it will be "/storage/sdcard1" for the MicroSD, "/storage/usbdisk0" for the lower rear usb port, "/storage/usbdisk1" for the upper rear usb port and "/storage/usbdisk2" for the side usb port).
Not doing that will drive Kodi's Tvheadend client plugin crazy trying to determine the available space for recordings.

Now you can launch Kodi, go to its settings, enable Live TV and select the "Tvheadend backend".

Remember that this is still something EXPERIMENTAL

Like the other Lollipop buils, remember, this is not a bug, but a consequence of the switch to art from dalvik: first boot, updates and apps installation will take longer; this happens because art compiles the apk and does not work like dalvik that was using a just-in-time approach (so expect almost 10 minutes for the first boot and future upgrades)

First install instructions

* As really first thing get this CWM recovery, unrar it and copy "recovery.img" to a MicroSD.
* Power off your device and unplug the AC power cord.

* Plug the AC power cord while you keep pressed the little reset pinhole (located on the bottom of the device) for 10 seconds (just count slowly to ten and it will be good).
* Once the device has booted to recovery perform a factory reset and flash the ROM's zip for first followed by the GAPPS zip.
* Reboot and enjoy CyanogenMOD.

Update instructions

If you're coming from the "regular", not "experimental" build of CM12, please follow the "First install instructions"
* Get the latest available ROM and GAPPS version from the links below and copy them to a MicroSD card.
* Now insert the MicroSD card in your STB.
* Enable "Developer options" following this tutorial and from it enable the "Reboot to recovery" option.

Pipo T9S RileyROM 1.0

Pipo has introduced a variation of the T9 tablet known as the T9S. This ROM is based on official Pipo firmware dated 1/12/15. I have no idea whether this ROM will work on the older T9 tablets, but Pipo has removed the early T9 firmware updates from their site.

The ROM is:

Rooted with SuperSU
Not much debloat was necessary on this ROM
init.d and busybox support
English as default language (full international support)
Multi-User activated
Your choice of 3 through 12gb user app space by selecting the desired EBR files
Auto install of apks in your external SD autoinstall folder
Tweaks added to improve the likelihood of being able to write to SD

I did not include a CWM Recovery in the ROM kit, because I forgot to do one until I uploaded the file to our server. If you want to run CWM Recovery, you can download the image and place it in the RileyROM folder and flash it.

A toy drone quadcopter on the White House grounds causes alarm from Secret Service

A toy drone quadcopter on the White House grounds causes alarm from Secret Service

by Dwulf

It was unable to detect a smaller quadcopter that crashed into a tree on the South Lawn early Monday morning around 3 a.m.
It raised some serious questions about the integrity of the White House security and if it could be dealt with in time if it got in a dangerous proximity to President Obama. Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, who is traveling with President Obama and Michelle Obama in India, said both Obama daughters were home at the time of the incident. The drone caused a temporary lockdown at the White House.
The drone was reported on Monday, as a Secret Service officer who was posted on the south grounds of the White House “heard and observed” the drone, the officer and others stationed at the residence were unable to bring it down before it passed over the White House fence and struck a tree.
The drone was too small and flying too low to be detected by radar, officials said, adding that because of its size, it could easily have been confused for a large bird. This raises the possibility of small drones that could also be used to launch chemical and biological attacks.
A photograph released by the Secret Service of the drone that crashed on the South Lawn looks partly broken. It appears to be a version of the DJI Phantom Aerial UAV Drone Quadcopter that is sold on Amazon.com starting at $479.
In a statement Monday afternoon, the Secret Service said a man had called the agency about 9:30 a.m. Monday to report that he had been the one controlling the drone when it crashed on the White House grounds.
The individual has been interviewed by Secret Service agents and been fully cooperative, Initial indications are that this incident occurred as a result of recreational use of the device.”
Under federal law, it is illegal to fly a drone in Washington.
Brian Hearing, a founder of Droneshield L.L.C., which makes drone detection systems for prisons and nuclear facilities, said radar systems are effectively useless for catching such small drones. If the systems were set to be sensitive enough to detect the drones, they would also detect every bird or swaying tree.
Many small drones also have a GPS function designed to return the drone to its user if it loses contact with the remote control, Mr. Hearing said. But it is also simple to program the GPS function to fly directly to a specific address, such as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Technology is available to jam the signals of an approaching drone, Mr. Hearing said, which could cause the drone either to fall to the ground or to return to its user. Such technology, much of it made in China, is illegal for consumers and others to use, he said. Even more sophisticated jammers could allow those protecting the White House to take control of the drone from a user.

Small Spaces photos

I'm finally getting around to finishing decorating my room, it's been a slow process due to how busy I've been, but lately in my spare time I find it relaxing to just sit on my bed, look around and see what ideas come up and then do them. This is just a small peak, a little more work needs to be done before I do an official room tour on my blog, but I'm happy with how it's coming along. I like to be in spaces that inspire me, whether it's at home or elsewhere...I feel better in a creative space, or at least less restless. Anyway, time indoors means I get to enjoy my summer clothes just a little bit longer ;)

Onda V919 is a 9.7 inch tablet from China which looks like the Apple iPad Air

Onda V919 is a 9.7 inch tablet from China which looks like the Apple iPad Air, but without the expensive price. Even with the cheaper price, it is actually a well-made tablet with good specifications, according toPhone Arena.
The Onda V919 3G Air only costs C$196.85 (from DX.com), offers 64GB of internal storage, and features 3G cellular data connectivity. Also, it has the capability to dual-boot Android 4.4 KitKat (not Lollipop unfortunately) and Windows 8.1. To switch between the two operating systems, you would only need to press a button.
For comparison, a 16GB iPad Air with WiFi only (no cellular connectivity) is about C$439, and with cellular connectivity is C$579. That’s a pretty big price difference!
Would you consider buying this tablet?

Review The year of the Windows Tablets

The year of the Windows Tablets

via Palmdoc.net

Link:http://palmdoc.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html#5351335680571020822

When the iPad first came out, it was the best thing since sliced bread for doctors. Now a tablet sized device can be a boon during ward rounds for accessing medical information and in some cases even an EMR on a device with a large enough screen yet maintaining portability, being able to fit in a large lab coat pocket, especially if you have one custom made like my eLab Coat.
It’s been almost 5 years since the iPad was first introduced (on April 3, 2010) and while it still is a great device, I find it difficult to do “real work” on it, particularly when it comes to creating content as opposed to consuming content e.g. making slides and full fledged “Office type” applications.
Windows is coming of age to the touch screen era. While Windows 8.1 has still a way to go, I believe the recently announced Windows 10 looks very promising.
But what about the hardware? In recent times we have been seeing a slew of cheap Tablets coming out of China. These 8 to 10 inch devices are really affordable, costing less than $250 in many cases. This price point is way below what you would have to pay for a Surface Pro 3 though admittedly these cheaper tablets have lower end specs. But being cheap does not mean these things can’t do a decent job for every day tasks.
My twitter buddy @mikecane has been doing a great job of reviewing the deluge of Windows tabletswith various brands like Teclast, Onda, Chuwi etc. There are so many to choose from but the price point is so tempting I succumbed and decided to get a Chuwi v89 Windows 8.1 tablet. This is an 8.9 inch light weight device (weighing only 370g) yet running full Windows 8.1
The Tech specs:
 CHUWI V89 Windows 8.1 Tablet
 CPU Intel Z3735F quad core X86 1.83GHz
System 7th Generration intel graphincs 646MHz
 RAM 2GB
 Capacity 64GB
Screen 8.9 inch 10-points capacitive touch screen
 Resolution1920 x 1200
 Extend  Card Support,up to 32GB
Camera Front is 2.0MegaPixels,Rear is 5.0MegaPixels
 WIFI Support WiFi 802.11b/g/n
 Bluetooth Built in Bluetooth 4.0
 Gravity
Sensor
 Support
 3G GSM:900+1800
 WCDMA:900+2100
 Audio OGG,AAC,M4A,FLAC,AMR etc
Picture JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG
 Video AVI,MKV,MP4,M4V,WEBM,3GP,MPEG4, etc
 Language Multiple languages
 Microphone Built in
 Speaker Built in
 I/O Port 1 x Micro USB Port
 1 x TF Card Slot
 1 x SIM Card Slot
 1 x 3.5mm Earphone Port
 Battery 3.7V/6400mAh
 Weight 369g
 Size 233.2*148.2*8mm
My impression after using it for a few days is it’s a decent Windows tablet. It is quite well built and has a reasonable battery life – I can get through a whole day’s work without any problem. The retina display is very nice and even though the default font on the Chrome browser is rather tiny, you can still make it out. It is hard to tap with one’s finger for the Desktop applications so for those it would be better in some cases to use a Bluetooth mouse. I paired my Bluetooth keyboard with it (made for the iPad 2) and it works fine too.
The main drawback is that one has to be careful how many applications are open at the same time since with the limited 2Gb Ram things can slow down if you are too enthusiastic with multi-tasking. That being said, it generally is sprightly and has fast boot up times should you need to restart.
The 64Gb eMMC is decent (more than the usual 32Gb you see with many other models) and if you throw in a 32 Gb SD card that should be plenty of storage for most people. A point to note in case you are not aware is that  you cannot install the downloaded Windows touch screen apps from the Store onto the external SD card but you can install regular Windows applications onto the external card.  For additional storage access, the set comes with a micro USB to standard USB host adaptor so you could plugin a thumb drive which the tablet reads without any problem.
Things which I plan to do:
1) Install DuOS so that I can have Android OS running side by side
In conclusion I give the Chuwi v89 Windows 8.1 tablet two thumbs up. It’s cheap yet a decent performer.
2015 will be the year of the Windows tablets as Microsoft makes a strong come back with Windows 10, and the market will be saturated with many Windows tablets or convertibles to choose from.

Foxconn to help its Chinese clients expand smartphone sales in emerging markets

Foxconn to help its Chinese clients expand smartphone sales in emerging markets
According to industry sources, Foxconn wants to help its Chinese handset clients expand their sales in emerging markets. The contract assembler counts as clients such expanding manufacturers as Xiaomi and Meizu. The former saw its smartphone shipments more than triple in 2014. Last year, it expanded to a number of emerging markets like Brazil, India, Indonesia, Russia and Turkey. But so far, results have been disappointing.

In India, the company sold 1 million phones in 2014, starting back in July. But Xiaomi has been banned from selling any handsets in the country until February. Ericsson has taken Xiaomi to court in India, claiming that the company is infringing on eight of its patents related to 3G, EDGE and AMR (adaptive multi-rate) technologies. The Delhi High Court will issue a final ruling next month.

Regardless of the outcome of the case, Foxconn could end up partnering with Xiaomi to build smartphone factories in India and Brazil. The Indian plant could be operational as soon as this year.

Back in August, Xiaomi pulled the high-end Xiaomi Mi 3 in India despite selling 95,000 units including a block of 15,000 that sold in two seconds. Xiaomi replaced the model with its entry-level Xiaomi Redmi 1S and itsXiaomi Redmi Note phablet. The reason for the switch had to do with ease of production. For Xiaomi, producing the Redmi 1S was easier than manufacturing the Mi 3. A new factory built by Foxconn could help Xiaomi produce its high end models, including the new Xiaomi Mi Note and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, more efficiently.
